Biology

The Biology Department offers students a wide variety of courses and laboratory experiences designed to develop a strong foundation in basic biological concepts and principles.

The broad curriculum encompasses areas such as plant and animal physiology, cell biology, microbiology, genetics, immunobiology, developmental biology, ecology, zoology, botany, and evolution, among other fields.

Student research in collaboration with a faculty mentor is a central part of many students' learning. Students who conduct research often co-author papers with faculty and present their work to the campus or at scientific meetings. The research process provides invaluable preparation for graduate school and careers in science.

Modern scientific instrumentation supports all study and research in biology. Students use advanced computer resources, electron microscopes, cold rooms, a greenhouse, environmental chambers, and many other facilities and resources.

Gettysburg biology majors have a strong record of success in the nation's leading graduate and professional schools, in medicine, in science-related careers, and in many other fields.

Wendy Dow '03

Biology and Environmental Studies
Double Major

A Gettysburg education has worked swimmingly for Wendy Dow as she pursues her passion for the sea and the creatures that live in it. Imagine for a moment that you are a young girl growing up on an island off the rocky coast of Maine. You are surrounded by the ocean, and it fascinates you. You wade in tidal pools. You make your mother stop the car so you can watch seals sunning on rock outcrops. You do a high school project on barnacles. Salt water runs through your blood. You know from your earliest years that you want a career that connects you to the sea and all its wonders. So when it comes time to choose a college, you quite logically choose…um… landlocked Gettysburg?
