Energy efficiency

Electric truck

Since the 1980s, Gettysburg has been aggressive about saving energy.

Despite additional buildings and a growing student population, our energy usage per square foot of building space remains one of the lowest among comparable institutions.

Efforts both big and small are making the difference, whether it's extending our high-efficiency centralized cooling system to additional buildings, installing more efficient refrigerators and other appliances, or simply switching to compact fluorescent bulbs.

Our reliance on fossil fuels declined from 61 percent in 1996 to 53 percent in 2006. In 2008, we contracted to obtain 20% of our energy from biomass.

An electric vehicle (above) helps reduce the impact of moving workers and materials around campus. Off campus, we reduce fuel use by operating a shuttle service to airports and train stations.
