Siviy's research interests are in identifying the neurobiological substrates of play behavior and studying the effects of early social isolation on the structure and function of brain monoamine systems. He earned a bachelor's degree from Washington and Jefferson College, a master's from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and a doctorate from Bowling Green State University. He also served as a post-doctoral fellow at the University of Sydney and UCLA.
